NEWS FROM THE CLERK’S DESK:
- Mark Your Calendars! - Due to scheduling conflicts, upcoming monthly Town Board meeting dates will be changed to: Thursday, September 16; Tuesday, October 12; Tuesday, November 9; Tuesday, December 14
- Election time is very near again. A partisan primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 14th for the following offices: statewide – governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, U.S. senator, Representative in Congress, Representative to the Assembly, county - sheriff, coroner, clerk of circuit court. At a partisan primary, you may only vote for candidates in ONE political party. This has been the case since the early 1990s. Therefore, when you vote on Sept. 14th, choose one political party in which you will vote, and vote for individual candidates within that party. Voting in more than one political party may void your voting choices.
- November 2nd is the general election.
- Election of Town Officials – Please be informed that at the Annual Meeting of the Town Electors held on April 13, 2010, a motion was passed that changed the method in which town officials (Chair, Supervisors, Treasurer & Clerk) are elected from having a caucus in January to having candidates circulate and file nomination papers with the town clerk by the first Tuesday in January preceding the election. Anyone who is interested in being a candidate for any of these offices is to circulate nomination papers between December 1 and the first Tuesday in January prior to the election which will be held the first Tuesday in April. If the number of persons submitting nomination papers to the town clerk on the first Tuesday in January are more than twice the number to be elected for that office, a nonpartisan primary election will be held Contact the town clerk for the necessary forms required when circulating nomination papers.
- The next Spring Election at which Town Officials will be elected will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2011.
NEWS FROM THE CHAIRMAN’S DESK:
- School has started and buses are on the road again. Safety is first, so please use caution as you travel around buses. Fall harvesting is also underway so more caution is needed. We have a large amount of custom cropping in GV and it goes on all hours of the day and night. Please pay attention as you travel about. It only lasts a short time and if we are all a little patient it will come and go without incident.
- Construction has started on Holy Hill Rd; it should be finished by the first week in October with the paving being done in the spring. If you can find an alternate route for that time period it makes things simpler.
- The final cutting of roadsides is complete along with brush cutting the ROW. We encountered some problems with items in the ditch again this year. When TVs and rolls of wire are discarded into a ditch and the grass and brush grow around them, it makes it difficult to cut. We are also finding rocks in the bottom of the ditches. We will be out removing as many of these as we can locate. If you know of rocks in the ditch, call a board member so we can remove them.
NEWS FROM THE TREASURER’S DESK:
- With tax time approaching, I want to issue a few reminders. The 2010 tax bills will be going out in early-mid December. I will have office hours for tax collections as I have in the past. Please review all the stuffers you receive with your tax bill, they include information on collection times/dates, address for mailed payments, dog license and information from Shawano County.
- Also, please note if you plan to pay your taxes in installments, the January 31st installment is the only installment paid to the Town Treasurer. The July 31st installment must be paid to the County Treasurer.
- Any questions, please call me at 715-851-1453, if necessary please leave a message and I will return your call. Thank You.
Town of Green Valley Mailbox (Roadside Receptacles) Replacement Policy:
This policy addresses the Town of Green Valley’s policy regarding mailboxes and roadside receptacles damaged as a result of the Town’s road operations.
Mailboxes and roadside receptacles are defined as any container used for the delivery of mail, newspapers, advertising circulars, or other printed material, along any town road right-of-way.
The mailbox or receptacle base should be placed two feet from the back of the shoulder of the road; the bottom of the box should be 41” – 45” above the road surface, and the front of the box shall not extend beyond the back of the shoulder of the road. The mailbox or receptacle base should be able to withstand flying snow and slush from traffic and snowplows.
According to the Division of Highways and Transportation Department there are several alternative methods for installing single mailboxes: An acceptable support for a mailbox includes wood posts 4” x 4” square or 4.5” in diameter. Soft metal conduits, which are 1.5” to 2.5” in diameter, are also acceptable. These supports should be embedded no more than 24” into the ground. These are additional support systems that allow the mailbox to swing if struck. On either of these two types of supports a mailbox may be mounted.
If a mailbox or receptacle base is damaged by flying snow or slush, the Town of Green Valley will not replace it. Any mailbox or base damaged by slush or heavy snow will be investigated by one of the Supervisors of the Town of Green Valley or their representative.
If a mailbox is physically hit and damaged by a snowplow or other piece of equipment, it will be replaced with a metal or plastic box acceptable to the U.S. Postal Service costing up to $10.00 only. Decorative or other types of ornamental mailboxes will not be replaced in kind.
